website strategies marketing strategyRecently, talking to one of our clients, we were happy to see that the website strategies used were steadily improving traffic, and more importantly, sales had doubled and tripled. This gave us all something to celebrate about, and we excitedly discussed what to do next to increase sales and traffic to a new level. The average sale was running between $35 and $40. We talked about running a sweepstakes, with a visitor spending a certain amount to get entered. I felt that would not be enough of an incentive to spend more. There are several problems doing such an event, such as legalities, fine print and money spent to bring attention to the sweepstakes.  We needed a different kind of promotion that did not require an advertising budget.  After a bit of research, the marketing strategy that looks very promising is cross-promoting with other websites who sell services and products in a much higher price bracket.

In the case of the client, there were two great opportunities for proposing a cross promotion. The goal for my client is to drive sales over a $50 per sale average. To do that, we'll offer a $50 promotional code that is rewarded upon spending $50 or more on my client's site. The promo code is provided by the cross promotion partner who is very happy to make a substantial sale and profit, by offering the $50 incentive.   It's lucrative for my client who increases the average per sale, and it's profitable for the cross promotion partner.  This cross promotion is set up as a one-way promo, but if conditions are right, both websites could cross-promote each other.  Using web 2.0 marketing strategies such as tweeting, blogging and a Facebook promotion, would most certainly boost 'word of mouth'.
