Simply said, doing social media marketing requires knowledge of search engine optimization. To get quantifiable results, one must understand tracking and paid search campaigns so that social media can be measureable. Using banners with those little bookmarking 'chiclets' can have a positive affect of multiplying impressions off of one paid click in a web 2.0 marketing campaign.
Synergy takes place on the Google content network, it gives the ability to target by keyword, site, demographics and media. So you can do text ads, banners, videos, and rich media and track it all.  Look to Youtube for online media, social media marketing and paid search, covering all three!  On Facebook you can do online media or social media marketing by doing a media buy, and then link the ads to your free social media marketing fan page. Encourage people to become a fan/friend and share with friends.  The synergy is happening with social content, video production, tweeting, and Facebook posts can be optimized to create a standalone social channel. You want your distributed content to help your site pop up in the search engines on its own.
